Talking This explains the loss of compression

Last time I mowed, the 125 changed sound, some smoke went forward and I shut it off as quickly as possible.

Here's what I found when I pulled the head





Seems the head gasket seperated , created a hot spot which allowed the material to allow hot gases to the nearest bolt hole and basically clear everything out of it's way. The block is fine and no additional bits could be seen on either valve.

The head is scrap and I have another one on it's way.

I'd check everything out really good. I don't think the gasket blew. It looks like the motor was running too hot, head melted and then it got the gasket. Check fuel mixture and air flow to the head.

It wasn't a Kohler gasket with the combustion ring. I'll double check the fuel mixture when I put it back together ( air flow is good hardly any debris on the head itself. )

x2 on the lean burn. That must have just about glowed as hot as it got.

jetting don't look to bad. the rest of the head is pretty black, when the head gasket started leaking it was sucking in and blowing out so it has the look of a lean out. its worth the time to check the carb adjustment, I'd check the timing to. may want to check the top of the block for flatness to

Not trying to hijack but my 1200 just did the same this weekend. can someone explain why running lean would cause this? Gotta get a new/used head now. gonna strait edge the engine deck soon as i can. ive got way to much $$$ in this freebie now with this problem.

I have to agree with Jeff on this one, it looks like a cheap gasket. Notice that there is no crimped seal around the inside of the gasket. The rest if the head still has black carbon, I think if it were a lean mix it would be brown.

The motor got HOT. The black carbon is not build up. It happened when it lost compression. Look how white looking the head is where it melted. Good head gasket seal all the way up to the blown spot. Good seal on the compression ring. Look at the gasket, just started to burn in the center. The gasket actually went up into the hole in the head trying to keep it sealed. Nope. No boys, this motor got too hot. Gasket held till the head melted.
