I read thru the "Uncle Dick" thread. Some great info and photos, thanks Dale. The best tip I got is the thrust washer's from McMaster-Carr. For those of you who haven't read it yet here are the part #'s;
needle thrust washer, 5909K32 $3.09 .032 thrust washer, (need 2), 5909K45 $1.09 each I guess by now y'all have figured that these are for the lever on the steering box. From the pictures it looks like the 2 nuts could be reused, but the lock nut is the best. Great idea Merk. Chris ![]()

Dale is a no bull-s kind of guy when it comes to IH Cub Cadet. See U.S.A Tractor Joe's IH Cub Cadet 72 Project over at MTF.com . Here you will see Merk in action on a k241 re-build. I just could have not chose anyone better to help me out, or Only Cub Cadets, the sponsors, and friends here at this forum.
![]() Dale also shared with me, that JD also has Ross steering units. So if you need parts, you can order for a JD because those parts are said to be less expensive than if you were to say Cub Cadet parts. ![]() Cub Cadet is for keeps! ![]()

I joined MTF a while ago. I will check that thread out. I want a 72 real bad. I had heard about JD for Ross parts.Thanks for heads up. I was lucky with my 104. It looked used up when I bought it in '05 but it ran good. When I tore it apart I was pleasantly surprised to find a '96 K301 replacement engine that is immaculate inside. The rear is also in amazing condition .My steering was dirty but all internals were reused. I'm 1/2 way thru a refurb. Maybe a full restoration in the future. This is a great site.
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
