I know the manual I read said to use SAE30 weight oil but I've read 2 different manuals and they both say SAE30 weight oil but one said to use detergent SAE30 oil. I don't have to use detergent do i? I'd be lucky to find detergent oil I can go straight #30

Kohler makes a straight 30 weight oil that is design for K series engines. The oil is design for flat tappet/non roller rocket engines. You should be able to find Kohler oil in a farm store or a place that sells lawn mowers.
Like Hy-Tran it does cost a little more. It's your Cub CAdet-use what you want to use.

SAE 30 is a detergent oil. There is also a Non-detergent 30. NAPA has them both, as do a lot of other parts stores. Just check the label carefully.

Better yet visit your local Cub cadet dealer and get the factory labeled oil. Nothing better for your Cub than OEM oil.

Maine...guessing you have a long way to go to find a CC dealer (I lived in NY and they were pretty scarce there also). straight 30 weight detergent is pretty common in farming country (here in Wis my local WalMart sells it although in the premium brands).
Dunno whether JD Green or the old IH Red (now Case I think) prevails there but any farm implement should have it if you can't find it elsewhere. |

Kohler, Harley Davidson, GM, Ford, never ending list of motor makers, none of them own an oil refinery!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
