Question May buy a 149
Hello to all. Found this forum a few days ago and have been reading some of the good info that you all share. Have a chance to buy a rough 149 for $100.00. The bad : tractor will not move. It broke down while Owner was mowing. Owner says motor runs fine. I turned the drive shaft by hand and it seems to not be connecting to the motor. I can see the shaft turning toward the motor, it goes into a metal round piece and it does not turn. Something serious possibly? Also has no battery. He took it out and put it in his other mower. Looks like orig. muffler and rusted pretty bad. Can you still buy parts for a tractor this old? I am retired and am wanting it to tink with and if I get it operating, will use to mow my yard. Mowing deck is in fair shape. Any and all advise and opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you've already found the trouble with a broken spiral pin that goes in the drive shaft and links the drive cup from the motor to the shaft. All kinds of folks have parts for these things and for that price you best go get it before someone else does! The parts to fix could be as cheap as 5 bucks and 30 to 60 min depending on your abilities. Good luck and we want pics once you get it

Bob I agree, it sounds like a broken spiral pin, easy fix. We would love to see some pictures of the 149,that's a great first cub.

For $100 buy it. If you can fix it cheap all good if not part it out and make a few bucks.

You might as well figure $100 for this one and $200 for the other 2 your going to buy for parts.

For that price, Buy it.
That's what i paid for my 149 several years ago.
There were a lot of little things to fix from the previous owners neglect, but it has been a great dependable tractor.

The pin that goes into the drive cup isn't a spiral pin. It's a hardened solid pin. But it sounds like that's your problem. It's a pretty easy fix

This is correct. it is a dow pin and not a spirol pin. There is a good chance that the coupler is worn causing the pin to break but for $100 you can splurge and buy a new coupler too.
