Default Hello from a new 1864 owner!

Hello all -
Just picked up a really sweet CC 1864. What a really nice machine. I was riding an old LX 172 John Deere, so this is like strapping on a V8 Dodge after driving a 4-cylinder rice-burner!

Anyway, I did a lot of reading and a fair amount of amateur research when picking this model, and this particular machine. There were a few other models I considered, but my search ended between a 1450 with a 48" deck, and this 1864 with a 54" deck. I went with the 1864 because of the bigger engine, and the huge mower deck. Naturally, it runs like a dream and cuts beautifully. It was fully restored by a gentleman in Fort Plain, NY who apparently had either an affiliation or affection with Cub Cadet. He had rebuilt and restored a number of these, and was truly a patient and diligent man.
Ok, so all of you know a LOT more about this machine than I do at this point, so here is my question, (and my point!) - What are some pros and cons of this 1864 that I might have missed in my preparation? Are there any missed or hidden issues I should be aware of? And finally, is there anything I especially need to pay attention with this 20-some year old tractor?

Thanks for reading. I'm glad to be here, and look forward to reading others' and sharing my own experiences with the the CC. BTW, I'm 46 (male), a proud (former, but still true at heart) UAW-member in Upstate NY.
Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

Matt

Matt

I have a 1864 my wife's Uncle Gene had and love it! I have the 48" deck and cat0 lift. They shipped with either the 48 or 54 but could be adapted with the 42 and 44 decks. I love the sound of mine! I love the tilt steering and my son loves the fact I can move the seat back after he drives it. Here's a pic of my wife taking it for a spin last year before I talked Uncle Gene into selling it to me. I've been trying for 19 years before he said yes!

Wiring (switches) and the plastic hood and side panels are problem areas.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
