Default 982 Finally Running WITH PICS !!!

Well many thanks to the members on here, and especially Roland, for all of the help. The tractor is finally running.
Installed a M18 Kohler Magnum in it that was given to me by a friend. Motor was very well taken care of and came out of an 1806. Before I even thought about starting it, I took the carb off and cleaned it out really good and cleaned the fuel tank out and replaced all of the fuel lines. Gave it a little shot of starting fluid and it started right up like it was a daily driver.

Still have some work to do though. The ammeter is showing discharge and I cannot figure out what is wrong. I have checked everything and all wiring seems to be right. I am puzzled though that the starter wire shows continuity to ground....but I have given up for the day and needed to take a break from it for a while.

Here are the pics....and thanks again Roland for your help and your patience.

Joe

I would bet that the magnets fell of the flywheel. It seems to be a common problem with m18's. I usually just jbweld them back on.You just have to make sure you get them in the right order.

BTW, nice 982. I really need to get mine out one of these days. It hasn't been started for almost 2 years.

Thanks Guys.............and Duke..........that is my 3 year old Grandson.......he is always by my side and wants to know every detail about "working on the tractor with Papa".
Also.....notice that hat, it is a 982 hat from Patton Acres. He saw that and went crazy and immediately said.........."Papa you got me a new 982 hat"...yeah, he knows the model numbers of the two tractors that we have, a 982 and a 582 roller that we still need a motor for. That kid is the joy of my life and every minute with him is an absolute gift.

Hey Aaron, thanks for the advice on the magnets. I am going to make sure that the ammeter is okay and I need to find out how to check that regulator to make sure it is working properly. This motor has been sitting for several years so anything is possible.
The wiring harness was straight out of the 1806, I still have all of the lights and PTO disconnected so this really has me puzzled.
ALSO....GET THAT TRACTOR OUT MAN....run that thing!!

Joe

Before you go too far, make sure you didn't hook up the ammeter backwards. Put your voltmeter across the battery with the engine running. Kohlers have good charging output, so you should see about 13.5V or so across the battery with the engine running at any throttle setting.

Default Hey Papa

Looks great..The grandson is going to need the wooden blocks on the petals in a couple years. That's a great story, something the boy will remember his entire life.

Glad you got that nice 982 running! You might have a tough time getting on the seat with that "little big man" around!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
