Default help with charging

Can anyone tell me how you can tell if the generator is bad? It will start fine but when I put a test light on the generator, on both poles, at a high idle, it is very dim. On either post you can barely see the light. I just got this tractor and it had a new wire harness on it. Everything seems to be alright on it. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Use a multimeter.

Check the voltage at the battery with the tractor off.

Start the tractor, check the voltage at the battery, the voltage should be higher when running at a speed well above idle.

Let us know what you find.

you need to polarize the regulator ...With everything connected , fully charged batt, key off, take a jumper wire and arc the Batt. terminal to the Gen. terminal or batt. to A on S/G. you just need to make a spark not a connection. any time the batt. goes dead or disconnected for a short time this should be done ...check for charging w/ volt meter

No need to polarize a starter/generator charging system, as it polarizes itself the first time you turn the key to start it.

With the tractor running, temporarily ground the F terminal on the S/G. If the ammeter pegs (if equipped, you didn't say what model tractor this is) to the charge side, the problem is the wiring or voltage regulator. If it doesn't, then it's the S/G. If it doesn't have an ammeter, then look for a voltage jump across the battery when the F terminal is grounded. Don't leave it grounded for very long or you'll burn up the S/G.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
