ok so today i was working on my 3 point hitch on my 122, and the freakin rear is all sludged up inside again. i changed the fluid but it must of still had water inside of it.
you think i could fill up the trans with some diesel fuel run it around for 15 minutes or so and drain it to try and clean out the sludge? it is gonna be hard now since it is cold out side and hopefully it wont freeze in there. |

I had the same issue on mine.
There is about a QUART, yea a quart of sludge waiting for you when you finally pull the axle housings off!! I could not believe draining the transmission left so much behind! ![]() Pull out the 9/16" wrench and take out the C-clips, you will be amazed. BUT, it fixes the issue. |

so you have to pull the axle tubes off?
now that you say that it makes sense cause im getting water out of the bolts that hold the axle housing on....... |

I have never had the rear end apart on my 70. I checked the fluid when I restored it a few years ago and it was ok looking. Since I don't think it has ever been completely apart, should I put that on my to do list this winter?

The axle housing acted like the gas tank settling bowl, collected the gook. Some transmissions have more sediment than others. I opened up a 108 last week that looks original and does not even need an oil change. So it depends on something, I don't know why some are dirty, some are clean. ![]() Let us know what you find!! ![]() |

yep zippy that is where it is coming from the lower bolts on the left side and it looks exactly like that brown nasty crap. i guess im pulling the axle housings...............
what i cant believe is i bought this thing running, and this is the condition the rear is in with all the water. i bought a trans from a 70 with the creeper gear, and that oil looked beautiful, no water what so ever but the gear shift tin the is on the top the bolts are completely rusted away and im gonna have to cut the tops off and drill out the rest of the bolts...... go figure |

Is there any type of product like sea foam that can be used to wash out the pump/differential that will not harm the unit?

looks like the problem is that on the left side of the axle housing is a small crevace that holds the fluid un intentionally. so i dont think it would help.
what im gonna try before i rip it apart, is to fill it up with diesel or kerosene and just pull the bottom bolts on the left and right axle housings. i dont really want to pull it apart till spring....... |
