Smile New member, 1282!
Hi folks,
I am a "newbie" to this great forum. I have owned (2) model 1282's for about 5 years or so. I would like to get your opinions and feedback, I want to attempt to restore this tractor come winter, I absolutely love this mower. Am I foolish for doing this? My friends and relatives think so because I could buy a new mower for the amount of money I would put into it, but I still wouldn't have a mower of this caliber ( in my opinion).

Welcome to OCC, jrod88! You are right about that. You won't find a new tractor today, that is tougher, than your 1282's.

First, Welcome to our Forum.........


IN MY OPINION....

You would be better off restoring a real Garden Tractor as opposed to purchasing the newfangled stamped steel w/fiberglass chassis's of today's production. I like a real frame, rear end, Kohler Motor and a beefy transmission. That's the way I see it. That's my story and I am stickin' to it.....:biggrin2.gif:

Tell your friends/relatives that they can go spend the same amount of money that you'll use to restore the 1282. Then, have them get back with you in about 15 years and compare the 1282 to their box store POS lawn tractor. My 27 yr old 782 destroys my parents brand new GT1554 and they paid 3200.00

I appreciate the encouragement. I have been a fan of this forum for quite some time, it wasn't until the other day that a friend of mine who is a small engine mechanic encouraged me to restore one or both of these tractors. Me being of little patience put the idea aside, but the more I look at the cheaply made overpriced junk that is on the market today, the more I am heading in the restoration direction. I don't want to make this thing a show piece, just a sharp looking USEABLE piece of equipment that I can depend on.

Welcome to the forum. I say overhaul, rebuild, restore. If the people around you have new plastic and tin lawn "tractors" from the local box store that's good. They will see your old iron working after they have bought a few more plastic and tin riding mowers. Then they might have figured out your wisdom and will come to you to buy one of yours.
