I'm in the process of refurbishing a 1650, and have found a hydro fluid leak. At first I thought it was from the external tube from the bottom of the hydro unit to just below the fluid filter. After tightening up the fittings, the leak persisted. It appears to be coming from the front of the unit, just behind the filter. Maybe where the brake shaft is located.
It's not a big leak, but after a week or so sitting there, it's enough that you want to get a paper towel and wipe it up. I had the inspection cover off the top of the hydro unit to take a peak inside, and added fluid at that time. It seemed to leak a little more with the additional juice, and then slowed down again. Could it be that it's over filled? What's involved with changing the seals if that's the problem. I'm considering just living with it, but since the tractor is torn down to the frame right now, this might be the chance to fix it right. By the way, I've found the information on this forum invaluable during this project. I've already modified my engine cradle, rebuilt the steering box, and repaired the worn speed control trunion. I can see light at the end of the tunnel, and will have a great machine when I'm finished.

It could be the gasket that goes between the pump and rear end housing. If you can pinpoint it to there, I'd change it out since it already apart.

I chased a hydraulic leak for weeks on my 1650. Same place. I replaced the gasket between the pump and rearend with no luck, but my leak was actually coming from the seal on the pump input shaft, where it comes out the back top of the pump. Best advice is clean it up with brake cleaner and rags, then watch to see if you can see where it is coming from

I'll keep looking for the source. As I mentioned, the tractor is stripped to the frame and is sitting level on jack stands. I'm trying to see just how much is leaking out. Keep the thoughts coming.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
