I know balance gears have been discussed over and over but I have a question. I picked up a 1650 and while trying to get a broken bolt out of the oil pan I discovered all kinds of pieces in the pan. The balance gears have let go but don't seem to have caused any damage. The motor ran strong before I pulled it out with no knocking.
My question is should I remove the remaining pieces or can I leave it alone. Looks like the pin came out but the pieces are pretty broken up. I really don't want to tear the engine out if I don't have to. Thanks Richard Lueders |

I agree with Duke, it may be a PITA to tear down the motor, but it would be really bad to see an inspection window appear in the side of the motor due to leaving some bad parts in it.

I'd say you are a lucky guy for not having more serious damage.

Those are the wrong gears. That is the crank and cam gear. The balance gears will ride on the small crank gear. That portion of the pic is not shown. Maybe the pic got cropped when downloading it.

I don't know if it's just the picture, but the rod dipper appears to have a lot of dings in it. If that's the case, you need a new rod.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
