Default 149 PTO: Rebuild or replace?

When I bought my 149 the PTO was kind of falling apart and wouldn't adjust right, so I finally pulled it off and looked it over. Since I have never had to deal with these PTO's before, I'm kind of at a loss. Here are some picture and I'm wondering if it is worth rebuilding or better to replace it. Also, is it all complete? This is the type with a brake as you can see. Also, should I replace the bearing or anything else while I have it apart or is it all good? The bearing seems to have very little slop. If anyone wants different pics or has a question I'd be glad to oblige.

The PTO doesn't look too bad, in terms of missing parts. Rebuilding will be much cheaper than buying one reconditioned and unless you get one from someone that is a respected person you never know what you will end up with, especially if ordering from Evil Pay. I have not had a PTO with the brake on it like yours, but below is a link for the manual PTO's and shows everything each style PTO has. I am positive some of the other guys with more knowledge of the style of PTO will give some great advice. Oh, as for the bearing, I would definitely change it while you are already that far into it. If you go to our Garden Tractor Library you can download the 1x8/1x9 Service Manual and it will have some good info on bearing removal and installation and then final PTO setup.

It looks complete to me. Since you have it off I'd recommend rebuilding it. Looks like you need a new brake shoe, the pad is completely worn off allowing the button to wear the center screw in the shoe. So you should also check the condition of the button. Not sure from the pic how worn the brake disc is, but that may be reusable. I know it's more $$, but if you can you should replace the bearing, so you don't have to go back in there again. I bet those are original parts, so if you replace them now you may not have to look at them again for another 30 years. Just my 2 cents.

Another question, what is supposed to hold the inner brake shoe to the pto clutch? When I took it apart it just fell out of there. Is there a snapring?

If you look at that link I gave you, you can see a washer and what looks to be a snap ring to hold the inner brake to the PTO. The list below the pics gives the name of each item and their part number.

Ah i see it now! So would those parts come in a repair kit? What about the button they attach to, because there is not a groove for a snapring to go into. What all is in a rebuild kit? Sorry, this one of the more foreign parts of the cub cadet to me.

It looks like you will have to order a standard PTO rebuild kit:
759-3489 $62.21

You can use these for part numbers. These prices are cubcadet online. I am sure our sponsors up at the top of the page can help you with most of everything listed below.

And then order the parts you will need for the brake individually.

Wow, when I add up everything I will need it is over $200!! The other thing I noticed is that the pulley has some pretty big grooves worn in it where the inner brake popped out of the notches it's supposed to stay in, and I'm afraid that it will only happen again. If I replace that too it would almost be better to buy a whole new rebuilt pto, because I will basically be doing that anyway, plus the possible difference in cost. I'll do some checking though. Thanks for the help!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
