hey all. after redoing the "86" last year, things seemed alright till this year when i started hearing "that noise". what's fun for me in redoing old tractors is getting to personally know them. kind of like your own kids. you can tell the difference between "crocodile tears" and "holy crap get the first aid kit".
i've narrowed down the problem that probably led to the demise of the previous clutch i replaced. the input shaft on the standard 3 spd trans. is bent. i haven't taken anything apart yet, and i would like to know if anyone else has performed this surgery before? i just had a hydro unit apart last winter for an overhaul and it's working great. so this can't be that hard, can it? i looked up the trans on the parts site but it doesn't show the input shaft. maybe i'm on the wrong page. the trans came off an "86" tractor with a serial # 2050042U413877, and a trans #385058 R1. the serial # plate is fixed to the trans case. do i need the "first aid kit" or should i play some "rock and roll"? |

Try one of the sponsors for the input shaft, or place a want ad in the classifieds.
It almost looks like somebody welded on that one at some point. If so, that probably warped it. |

so i got this beast off the tractor and on the bench. i took off the cover and have absolutely no clue how this comes out. does it get pressed out, pulled out? it appears the bearings get pressed in, but i really have no idea how to get them out. the diagram that i found in the parts lookup, shows the shaft and bearings and something else, which i believe i don't have. so i'm thinkin i have the wrong diagram. does anyone have any ideas that may stir something in my head that i may be missing?

I have not had one of those out, but the process is explained in the service manual. There may be a link in the tech library. If not, try here.
I could be wrong but I am 99% sure that the input shaft is the same from the 70 through the 582, as in all IH-built gear drives. I'm not sure what the part number is, it might be NLA from CC, and really expensive if it isn't. |

more pics of the bent shaft. according to the parts diagram, there's a snap ring hidden between the housing and front bearing. you need a mirror or a small head to see up under there. i'll be going after that this aft. keep you all posted.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
