Is anyone else having a problem with front wheel bearings not lasting?
Last Nov. I replaced the 34 yr old bearings on my 1650 and have gone thru three sets of them since. They last about three times mowing the yard. They are from cub cadet. Rich B. |

there was a post on here within the last 3 months where someone had exactly the same problem with brand new bearings from cub cadet. I would recommend ordering some from Motion industries, or some similar place. You could probably get a better quality bearing for less than MTD prices.

Have you checked the end play of your wheels. If the wheel is allowed to move back and forth too much, with too much end play, the steering knucle can contact the inside of the wheel rim causing undo strain and side loading on the bearing.
I believe the IH manual says .033 max endplay. See if yor wheel has too much and shim it up. Recently had this issue and had to grind a little meat from the knuckle for clearance.Works fine now. Joe |

The bearings need to be sealed on the outside, and I typically re-pack new bearings with grease because they don't come with much from the beginning.

I use double sealed and don't ever grease mine.

Had the same issue with my 129. Seems the Cub Cadet bearings are now made overseas. Running made in USA bearings now......... expect them to hold up better.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
