Default Pilot Bearing?

Hi Members! New guy here with a question! Does a pilot bearing wear out over time? I've got a scraping or growling noise on my IH Cub 1282! It started last summer while mowing and continues to this day! Seem's to run alright except for the noise! When I'm idling in neutral, she peck's em off nice and quiet, then all at once it or something kick's in and it starts to scrape or growl then the noise quit's again! This is with-out mower being engaged! Where should I start to look? Sounds like it's around the shroud & fly wheel, if that helps! Thanks!!

Pilot bushings need grease to keep operating correctly. They never get the grease because the only way to lube it is to pull engine out. But, and I don't know your tractor, you would only get the noise from a gear drive, and with clutch pedal depressed. Might not want to go into gear, as if clutch weren't depressed at all. Or hard to shift.

Check your front pto bearing. My 1811 did that because the bearing would sieze after it ran a while. Turn the pto on and see if the noise stops. Good luck!

There is a bushing that is bolted to the engine that the driveshaft rides in. I bet that the bushing is shot. And yes, they do go bad.

Sounds similar to my noise on my 1000, and a few folks on here said it was probably that pilot bushing. If I'm in motion, and rest my foot on the clutch just enough to take out the free play, everything runs ultra quiet. If I take my foot off, I hear the growl.

And like William said, sometimes it's hard to shift into gear, because depressing the clutch doesn't always completely stop the shaft from spinning. I'm hoping that is the only problem, sounds like it could be yours too.

Oops: I was thinking gear drive, we must have been posting at the same time.

Guitar guy... you got a bad throw out bearing in addition to the pilot bushing.

Yes, this is a hydro trany! The noise doesn't make much difference when I push the pedal down or not! Almost act's like the pto is kicking in and out as it seems to put a little load on the engine when the noise occurs! Checked drive shaft while running, didn't detect any wooble or looseness! Guess I'll be pulling the engine to investagate futher! Thanks for the help!

Did you engage the pto to see if the noise stopped?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
