Default What parts to keep handy? 1811/1872
At my dad's farm he had 4 tractors. Allis Challmers D17, Ford 2000 , Kubota and Cub. I'd tell my dad stay with same brand so some parts would enter change and you could learn the systems. Now that I have 2 1811's and a 1872 to keep running. What spare parts would you keep handy? I think the last things that I broke. 2 deck hangers, 1 deck idler spring and 1 tie rod end. These are few things I think I should have. What's in your stock?

Tie rod ends, filters, fluids, carb gaskets, carb kits, fuel line, spirol pins for the driveshaft (those are a must have)..... maybe a belt or two. But in the day and age of being able to get most anything in a day or two, you don't need to keep much.


I have lots of stuff I keep though. Too much to list. But that's because I have so many projects "in the works" and I do stuff for other people sometimes. I keep about 5 of each individual gaskets for the K series. So, I get a leak, or someone else does, I don't have to order gaskets. The 18XX tractors don't have those issues as bad.

I keep a carb kit, head gasket, plugs, points, and condenser. Mule drive, deck, and thrower belts.

The item all my machines seem to always need is... Fuel.

Points and head gaskets seldom fail.

Never know when a carb might go to leaking though. Seems they suddenly do that......

Correct as always Jon. But when they do go bad it seems to always be after hours and holidays. On more than one occasion I have been the hero when a neighbor needed something.

Got a saying on the family farm. "Pair and a spare." That is what you need of what ever you can think of. A pair and a spare. Could refer to spark plugs or entire machines!

I work on my cousins farm.... that's what their philosophy is. But all that really amounts to is a bunch of used junk taking up space. Or, brand new parts that they can't find.

I thought all farm shops operated under that guideline? Heck we still have new parts for equipment that left 20+ years ago.
