Default Fixed Steering Issues 782

Did a steering clean-out and re-grease last month (also reshaped the steering pin, new foam gasket, etc.). Didn't get around to upgrading to the thrust bearing.

Well, last evening I did. Bought new thrust bearing (equivalent to Nice 605, $1.96), jam nut with nylon insert ($0.95) and washer ($0.40). Had to take the deck off to clean anyway, so while deck was off, removed the two jam nuts and replaced with bearing/nut combo.

I can tell a difference. Can turn the steering wheel with ease with one finger!

Also, realigned my steering wheel and tie rods so the mower turns equally to the left or right. If this rainy weather ever stops, I'll be ready for some smooth mowing.

The bearing is probably made in China-don't have a part number. Work in Lenexa, KS, so the IBT distributor is not far from me in Shawnee. Walked in and asked for an equal to the Nice #605 bearing. Any bearing supply place ought to be able to cross reference that to one they stock.

Bought the jam nut and washer at Feldman's in Blue Springs. They stock a huge variety of Hillman hardware. Don't have the number for the jam nut either, but it's a 5/8"-18 thread count with nylon insert. Don't believe that Westlake carries them.

Hope this helps.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
