Default Cub Cadet 17 hp Kohler Magnum

I'm looking for a motor for my sons box store husqvarna, it came with a 21 HP B&S ELS that had low hours on it when crank shaft or rod was done in, I pulled the heads, and one side had 1" play up and down on the piston. Being he was not old enough at the time to cut grass, I had a 12 HP B&S for him to use as a small tractor, now he is ready to cut grass, and this husqvarna is a good grass cutter, and above all he can handle it, it has a 46" deck, way to much for the little B&S single cylinder.

Now here comes in the cub, I found a cub cadet on the side of the road, no stickers, no serial, no model, no deck, however it cranks up, runs good, no idea what model it is, it has a 17 HP Kohler Magnum twin, opposed. I was thinking if I could get it cheap enough this would be a good motor for his husqvarna it's model MV18S spec 58520. What kind of money would the motor alone be worth ?

The cub cadet may bring some money for parts, no idea what model, and I looked good all over the mower. It's a lawn tractor, small wheels and tires, vertical drive with belt, plastic hood, with black plastic emblem/v looking ornament on front. Anyone have any idea what this is I know vague for sure, the shifter is on the dash right side of steering, 5 speed, and feels looks to be a manual transmission. Also what do you think of the motor, I have read somewhere that some of the Kohler opposed twins would not get oil everywhere when on the side of a hill etc, however I assume this is a full pressure lube, it has a oil filter as well.

Thanks for any info you can come up with.

Clint

Ok. I can't tell you what the model of that tractor is because I'm not versed on the lawn tractors, but that engine would be a 18hp magnum. They are great engines but with it being a vertical crank design, it isn't worth what the horizontal engines are worth, mainly because of demand. The only engine that really ahd the bad oiling problems were the kt17 series 1 engines found in the 682/782 tractors. They fixed that problem with the series 2 KT17. Yours would be basically a kt17 with solids state igintion or a magneto and no points. I would say the engine is probably worth $250 if it runs good with no smoke or weird noises.

Hope this helps,

AJ

I assume it's no longer under the manufacturer warranty?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
