Refinishing a Cub hood

When you refinish a Cub Hood do you sand it clean, decals and all. I want to sand mine and get the rust all off it, but didn't know what you did to get the old decals off. I see some pictures of beautiful refinish jobs on here.

I didn't want to leave the old decals and then have that peal off somewhere down the road. My hood metal is in good shape, but it has a lot of scratches and rusty looking places.

Get the decals completely off and the rust areas down to good metal. The old paint can be sanded well and then a good primer put over it all. Some guys use a 3 or 4 inch grinder with a good abrasive flap wheel to get the old decals off with. Just go slow and don't eat into the metal.

You have a few of options, one like DX3 stated with a flap wheel...(cons; it can hit the metal pretty hard) The other two are a chemical stripper and then hit the metal with 320 wet sand paper.. Or you could wire wheel and the hit with 320.. The wire wheel will take rust and paint off but not hit the metal too hard. Chemical can suck if you do not have a good area for it. Wear a dust mask for any of it though.

Electrolysis will remove the paint and the rust. Use a rust converter on what's left, then fill, prime, and paint.

I use a hair dryer to warm a corner of the decal, then slowly peel it off using the hair dryer as you go. You'll still have some glue residue from the decal on the paint, but much easier to sand off rather than trying to sand the whole decal off.

I use a heat gun to get my decals off. Takes off glue and all no prob. Then I sand blast the metal prime n paint.
