I am getting a plan together for one of the two cubs, just not sure which one, to get one running good for mowing season. With the limited knowledge I have so far I do know that these gears could be a problem if still inside an original engine. The question is, can I see if the gears are inside without tearing the engines apart? One is in a 109, looks original, the other is a 149, I know it is not original, but not sure what it is, the plate has been painted and can't read it. If the gears are out I will work on just getting them running and go from there, just don't want to air out a good block, or two.

If the engine has the dipstick on the front right then it does not have balance gears.
If the dipstick is on the cam gear cover next to the points, then it may or may not have the gears. In that case you would need to pull the oil pan to look for the gears.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am going down to throw a few logs in the stove so I will take a quick peak. Hears crossed fingers that I don't have any, I think the 10 is good, the 14 has a dipstick on the right, but something down by the points.

Well, the 109 has the dipstick on the right, yee haw. The 149 has a dipstick/ fill tube on the right in the same spot, but also has the dipstick down by the points. The engine is the wrong color and the paint looks like crap, head gasket is leaking so the 149 engine is coming out for a closer look. I really want the 149 for the main mower so time will tell how deep I go into the engine. Looks like all the way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
