OK, I figure the belts on my 149 need to be replaced at some point, but the starter/generator belt seems to be twisting as the engine runs. When I first noticed it, I did a quick fix in the driveway, but when I pulled the Cub into the barn, I noticed it was twisted again. Hmmm, OK, so after it cooled off some, I straightened it, tightened things up, and after starting it up, it twisted again!

It had been my experience that once a belt rolls over/twists it will no longer behave itself in the pulleys.
Replace it as soon as possible as Steve said, taking care to tighten it enough as not to slip when starting but not so tight as a gee tar string:biggrin2.gif: |

I bought this Cub from the original owner and I absolutely love it! Included in the deal was a case of oil and several qts of hydro oil. The oil is Shell X100....SAE 10W. I knew it was old, but yikes! After doing some research, I've found this is vintage 70's oil and brings in a pretty penny on eBay from collectors. (why would anyone ever collect oil? Oh wait, that seems to be a pretty big scam these days....ha). Anyway, I gotta hope these belts are not quite as old as the oil, but I'll be replacing all of them tomorrow when my local dealer (NAPA) opens. Will update....

Can't hurt to check the pullies.Make sure there not worn. look for groves on the inside of the pulley.

OK, guys, what's the easiest way to remove/replace this starter belt? Am I correct in thinking that the PTO pulley needs to be removed first?

Next remove the PTO lever rod from the RH side of the tractor (on the side of the dash tower). This will now give you slack to rotate the PTO clutch engagement lever toward the front grill (located in front of the engine). Loosen or remove if needed the upper adjustment capscrew on the starter/generator bracket. Loosen the two pivot/lower capscrews on the lower mount to allow rotation of the starter/generator assembly towards the engine. Now slip off the starter/generator belt from the engine pulley. Then the starter/generator pulley. Snake the belt out of the engine bay and away from/between the PTO pulley nose and PTO engagement lever. Reverse order for installment of new belt.
