Default K301 exhaust port repair

i ran into this issue with my 123 cub when i disassembled it. the threads in the block are badly corroded and some have completely rusted away. i cant get the elbow exhaust pipe to thread back in. what can i do to get this repaired? i dont want to scrap the block since it is original to the tractor but i also want to be able to use the stock and stack style exhausts i have. my local Case IH dealer said there wasnt any way to repair it other than to make it a boat anchor.

I think you can drill and tap the bosses to the sides of the exhaust outlet and put a flange on the pipe. I may be wrong. Sombody will either correct me or tell you the correct way to fix it.

thats what i was thinking too. but i was informed by the IH guys that there wasnt enough "meat" to retap the outlet. i had also come across an idea on haveing a bushing at the right diameter put in and tapped for the exhaust but that will be more than i can do since i am limited in tools

I think you are misunderstanding. He is suggesting that you drill and tap the bosses on either side of the exhaust port(hole). Some blocks are already done and this is were a bolt on manifold would mount. You would not be using the threads in the port(hole) at all.

Ok yea i see what you guys mean there is plenty there to drill and tap the bosses. got a little confused there and not sure how i did that to myself. Thank you guys for the help! :biggrin2.gif:

Don't go and drill to deep. You need to find a spec on how deep to drill, or you might have more of a problem than you started with.

I can get a rough estimate off of my 12 hp unit from my 128. It was factory drilled.

Thanks for the measurement DX3! I knew it couldnt be too deep but wasnt sure how deep to go. Now i can use both exhaust styles and just undo a couple of bolts. Yall are invaluable sources of information!

Does anyone happen to know where i can get an exhaust flange to fit the K301? i dont have a band saw otherwise i could make my own easily instead of making my forearms look like popeye's. Also what kind of metal would be ideal for exhaust tubing?
