I recently got a transmission that came out of a 122. The PO had filled it with diesel fuel to help loosen up the shift forks. I drained the diesel fuel out so I could inspect the condition of the gears and luckly everything looked great. This transmission is going to be setting until next spring, so what should I do? Looking for a good but "cheap" way to refill it.
A: Fill with diesel B: Fill with some cheap motor oil C: Fill with UTHF or hy-trans D: Fill with gear oil E: Do nothing, leave it dry |

Put in the amount of Hytran that belongs in it.

If you choose to fill with hytran I would physicaly roll it a couple of times like making a snowman,to help coat all internal surfaces to retard rust. If you chose to use hytran like Matt says, you would need do nothing to put it in operation when ready to do so. That would be the least cost option, with no wasted fluid of any kind. |

Would it leak out the shifter when it is turned upside down?

Yes, it will. I wouldn't turn it completely upside down.

Removed the rear end cover and drained the remaining diesel fuel out last night. While it drained made a new gasket out of some fel-pro 3046 gasket material. Tip- a .357 mag shell casing works great for punching out the bolt holes in the gasket. Cleaned up the mating surfaces and installed new gasket. I then removed the shifter cover and filled with one gallon of NAPA brand UTHF. I know, it's not HY-TRAN, but it is better than nothing. I will put HY-TRAN in next spring when I tear back into it. One question, what is the torque spec for the rear cover bolts?

I believe it's 30 ft-lbs, but check your service manual. There's a table of torque values on the first or second page.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
