Default KT 17 series II carburetor problems

I have 2 manuals and both show I should have a main fuel adjusting needle going down from the top of my carb. I dont have one. Is that normal or is my carb messed up? The motor will run, but only with the choke closed. And it will run good like that for a long time and idle but as soon as you open the choke it will sputter and die. I have taken bowl off and float is not sticking andneedle and seat seem ok. I can see the end of the main needle when looking from inside the carb and it also is not clogged. Can anyone help me out? Thanks Curtis

Curtis: I've had the same problem, so I'd recommend that you replace the fuel pump. Those symptoms are from a starving carb not getting enough fuel from the fuel pump...

The KT-17 also came with one of two different types of Carbs. It could have a Kohler or a Walbro. The Walbro Carb does not have the needle valve in the top.

Default carburetor problems

Thank you as I forgot to mention it is a Walbro carburetor. So You guys think it is the fuel pump. I have diconnected the fuel line going to the carb and I do see that it is pumping. How much pressure should I be seeing? Is the fuel pump worh rebuilding or is there even a choice, or just buy a new pump.

This doesn't seem to be a popular suggestion however... I have almost every spare part I need in stock as result of several parts tractors. Much cheaper in the long run to buy complete tractors and box up the good parts. If I think I have carb problems I can simply swap out a known good carb.

Here is the Fuel Pump check out procedure as found in the Service Manual....

The fuel pump is non serviceable. If found bad, then replacement is needed.
The tractor is about 30 yrs old, and fuel pumps do wear out.

The Carb serves a function of delivering a Gasoline/Air fuel mixture. Now, the the question comes. Are you not getting enough gas OR getting too much air (ie: Air leak from bad gasket)...?? This maybe something to check also.

Obviously, there is a problem with the fuel/air ratio. You just have to narrow down the problem to include the Carb itself.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
