Default Will this K301S work?

Hey everyone,

This is a 12hp I picked up with only 8 hours run time. I've been messing with quietlines and don't know much else about other Kohler configurations. So if you could, take a look at these pics and see if you have any answers tot hese questons. I would really appreciate it.

1) Can anyone tell me their best guess as to what this engine was on at one time?
2) Take a look at the exhaust, did a Cub ever have that configuration?
3) What would it take to modify this for a pre 1975 Cub?
4) And, if I remove the engine cradles out of a quietline, can I use this by bolting directly to the frame?

By the way, the output (PTO) shaft is one and one-eight inches.

This looks like it could possibly be out of a wheelhorse. i know that some had that kind of oilpan and had the exhaust like that too. i don't think that it would directly bolt up to a quietline but i'm not sure.

Looks like it may have come from a Bolens...or similar. I have several wheel horses, and I dont think they ever had that style dipstick. Also, it appears that the exhaust was cobbed together by the previous owner using pipe fittings. The biggest problem(s) are going to be that the oil pan will not work due to the overall footprint, and bolt hole placement, and the crankshaft on the flywheel side will most like need some creativity to make the drive cup for a cub mount properly. I have been down this route before..I tried using a K341 from a Wheel horse in my 1211, it required replacing the crank with a cub designed crank of the proper length, and finding a deep cub oilpan with the proper mounts. The original crankshaft on the output side of the K341 was too long to allow the use of the original electric pto. It can be done easily with a few swapped parts...Good luck.

That motor could have come out of nearly anything, a pump, generator, or tractor, literally anything. If the crank is 1 1/8" a pto from a Cub Cadet won't fit on it. The oil pan is too thick (tall) causing the crank to not line up with the drive shaft. It may be possible to bolt this motor directly to the frame of a Quiet Line but you're gonna have to measure the height of the crankshaft with the height of the driveshaft for yourself, without knowing exactly what that motor was made for, no one can tell you what the exact distance is between the bottom of the pan and the center of the crank therefore you don't know if the crank and the driveshaft will line up properly.

I did undertake a similar project one time, I had a brand new wide pan Kohler motor that I wanted to put into a Cub Cadet. I took the pan and milled the top of it off to the same thickness as a Cub Cadet pan (which made the top of the pan about half way in the middle of the drain plug on the side, then drilled and threaded a new drain plug hole in the bottom of the pan, I also had to cut off the dipper on the rod cap, so it didn't hit the bottom of the pan. Then I had to drill new holes in the frame of the Cub to mount the motor. I also had to manufacture a dipstick tube that would fit the opening in the block yet seal properly around the rubber on the dipstick. It was a lot of work but the project came out alright and I was fortunate to not end up with any oil leaks. It was a fun project but not one that I would really want to do again.

I apologize to all the "purists" out there but I think I have seen others fit that style Kohler pan to an Original due to the large flat mounting surface of the frame. Some others here may know of the challenges of this fit-up.

Thanks for the responses. If any of youse guys are interested, I think I am going to put it up for sale. Too many other projects in the mix to mess with finding a tractor it will fit.
