Default 1450 ignition switch

Someone on here told me to tear apart my ignition switch and clean it and epoxy it back together. Can someone tell me how to get it apart?

Well, that's out of date. Current count is 2 LT1050's, a 76, 1 2284, 1 2130, 1 2135, 1020, and 10 1250- 1650's, with decks, blades, snow throwers, and a Brinly plow

I think that was probably me. You can do one of two things: either take a very small screwdriver and pry off the crimped-over edge bit by bit, or grind off the crimp. I used to pry off the crimp, but it cracks the case because it is very brittle, so I think it'd be better to grind it off. Then you can pull it apart and clean up the contacts and put it back together. Be careful when you separate the halves, as there are some springs and stuff in there that can fly out. I think the back is indexed to the case with a tab; if not, index it before you take it apart so you put it together right again.

I never took one apart,I don't like the idea of springs flying all over the place.Matt,have you tried Tuner cleaner?They sell It at radio shack

I tried putting contact cleaner in the switch, but it didn't work. You have to clean the inner workings, and nothing can get in there unless it is disassembled. There's nothing to lose by taking apart a non-functional switch since you'd have to get a new one anyway. I think there's only like 2 springs, but if you take it apart slowly and know they're there, you won't lose them.

The problem is usually that the grease they lube the rotating part with winds up all over the place and on the contacts.

Yup, only 2 tiny springs, but not too bad. Ground it off, slid apart a little tough which was nice, cleaned it and used the little file to really clean the contacts and put it back together. Now hopefully I have the copper piece in the right way.

Well, time to get another switch. The epoxy didn't hold and one of the springs went MIA. Where is the cheapest place to get one??
