Default IH Cub Cadet 71 gear oil change

Now that I'am ready to paint my spacer rings, I thought I could use up more Cub Cadet paint and finish off the quart. I was worried about the gear oil so thought I should change it and paint the parts. Looking at some of the Member's pictures of this I had to see for myself. Here are some pictures....and as you can see, everything was clean as NEW! I could not believe it, no sludge, no nothing but black-red oil! I would like to believe that by the paint overlap on the diff. cover that this was never opened up since it was installed so many years ago. It was a waste of time, the oil was clean and good for life,.... as far as I'am coincerned and how I treat my tractor. Removed all the bolts in order as to where they live they shall go back. I'd have to say that every bit of a gallon of oil came out. Useing a rubber mallot tapping around the bolt holes became loosend, and one stroke of a puttyknife broke the seal and then quickely filled up my pot I made at work. I tryed to take pictures of just how clean this was. But you just never know. What I know now is that after the morrow, it will be good long after I'am gone! In the morning I shall behold me some Hy-Tran Cub Cadet oil and a gasket. I was wondering about the 15$ gasket....... I know darn well that I could use the cardboard from the 12-pack Miller G. Draft that I have at the ready for a gasket. Well, thats all for now. I will up-date us I go along with re-assembely.

I see hints of the sludge on the ledges. Most of it lays in the bottom like it is supposed to and its thikest back in there where you cant reach your hand. Jack the front of your machine up and get the rest of that oil out of there you'll see it.

Yes, Thanks for the in-put because after all it is way older than me! I agree that it was time to change the oil out! She is draining out for a spell untill I get my supplys and time to do it. But I did see alot worse posted here.

Got everything scraped off and clean. Been a busy day. Truely. Anyhow, I have not got much done.... now I must wait to paint and wait for to dry. Bummer,...just a real-life person multi-tasking. Its like sometimes I cant get any time to finish my tractor projects with in a reasonable time frame. I dont see how you guyes do it. I have been going non-stop since I got up this morning. It would be cool if I could compleat the things I need to do when I sat I can. But it just dont happen and thats a major blow to me.

Default Not done yet

Well, today is a rainy day so I'am gonna get these few things painted. The tin plate was beat up pretty good. I'am just gonna scratch it up, primer and paint. Also here are some of the paint and prep. products I'am working with. I realy like the Krylon spray paint products. And since I have the diff. gasket out, I'am gonna make one out of cardboard....to use one day or to use as a templet when I go to buy more gasket material. I'll post more on this later on. Thank, John

I'm waiting for my gasket to come in and then I'll be changing mine out too. My gasket is leaking. Maybe I'll snap a photo too. Mine has a FEL on it so it'll be easy to jack up the front too. I just hope the gasket does the trick and something isn't cracked in there.

Hey I didn't know you could by that oil by the gallon. That's good to know. I was paying like $7 per quart. I bet the gallon is cheaper (if I can find it).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
