Default new 129 owner question about PTO noise

Hi guys, I am a "new to me" 129 owner. I am very happy with my cub. My wife hates it..the neighbors come over to stare it when I'm working on it or cutting the grass. This site has been very helpful when researching information about this tractor.

I have a question about the PTO. It has started making a loud vibrating sound intermittently. The noise happens when the pto is engaged and or released.

MY father in law (who owns a 149) thinks there's some springs missing. Is the PTO tough to rebuild? I have downloaded an read the manual. I am thinking it is maybe the bearing? Will I need puller to get this bearing off?

Thanks,

Andy

Here is the new video from Hubman on PTO removal.

It sounds to me like it is your bearing. I cannot tell from the pictures if your anti rattle springs are in place or not, But that would only make any difference when your PTO was disengaged.

Try taking the belt off and see if the PTO feels loose...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
