HELLO EVERYONE,
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 69-70 CUB CADET 147. IT HAS THE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE AND THE ELECTRIC LIFT.
I WAS LOOKING FOR A (SMALLER) RESTORATION PROJECT AFTER I FINISHED MY 72 CHEVELLE.
I HAVE 6 ACRES IN THE 'SAND HILLS' OF NC, AND I NEED SOMETHING OTHER THAN MY RIDING LAWN MOWER TO GET AROUND AND TO PUSH/PULL THINGS.
SHE RAN GOOD AT THE BIG DENTON, NC TRACTOR SHOW WHERE I BOUGHT IT. ONCE HOME IT ONLY RUNS FOR A FEW SECONDS. I THINK I PICKED UP A LITTLE TRASH FROM THE GAS TANK.
ANYWAY, WHAT IS THE BEST SOURCE FOR PARTS?
MY S/N IS 2050041UZ34627
I WENT TO CUBCADET.COM AND CCPARTS.COM, AND NEITHER COULD VALIDATE MY S/N?
LOOKING FOR ADVISE.

MIKE

First, welcome to OCC.........

Second, you can turn off the Capital Letters. We can read just fine.

My S/N is: 2050041UZ34627
Not a valid serial number. My guess would be 2050041U334627 (the 147 range was 316,318 to 400,000)

Welcome to OCC! Good luck on your searches. The technical library section on here is a pretty good source for most info.

you can go to the "lookup parts by diagram" search by model 147 you will have better luck. you may have to select "garden tractor" if the model number does not produce the link you need. then under garden tractor search 147 I had to select more rows to get the 147 to come up.

Thanks everyone with your advise. My pressing concern is two fold. I keep picking up rust dust from the gas tank. It will run fine for 10-20 min then stop. I clean out the carb and back at it again. What is a good product to clean rust out of the gas tank?
Second pressing question. The small lever down below the seat is supposed to disengage the hydrostatic drive so I can push the tractor, correct? It doesn't work. It just flops around. I can't push this 740 lb tractor! What's the problem...me or the tractor?

Most likely the "flapper" (spring metal piece) that is 'posta be attached to the
lever/shaft that actuates the release valves has broken or is MIA ( quite common)
you have 2 options:
#1: repair the flapper mechanism or actuator if you prefer, or
#2: replace the 2 release valves, with the newer style that are automatic. and need no activation
On the crud in the tank:
take the tank off, drain and refill with some CLR rust/lime remover and add a handful of 1/4"
or 5/16" nuts or pea gravel size rocks.
and shake the shit out of it.
It might take ya a while shakin' an sloshin' till it is cleaned up inside.
but keep at it, might take some sittin' an restin' then go back at it.
When you are satisfied with the results, wash it out with soapy water a few times and let it air dry in the sun.
Reinstall and use a GRAVITY inline filter just incase your favorite fill can is adding rust/crud to it while filling.

Default Release valves

George,
Upon further inspection, I see the flapper plate is installed upside down or backwards. It hits the front of the drive housing instead of the top where the valves are. Nevertheless, both valves are stuck solid. I tried spraying them and gently tapping on them but they don't budge. Who carries the 'automatic' valves you mentioned?

on yer flapper/actuator handle, make sure it just don't need rotating on
on reinstallation so it presses on the release valves.
You don't want to purchase new valves from cub as they are costly.
there is a fellow that rebuilds them
http://www.machtechdirect.com/rebuil...ef-valves.html

And there is another place that sells them or used too, as it's been a while and they were less expensive :
LJ fluid power Delton Mi. (google it).
Keep the penetrating oil on them and tapping them and they might free up but then will prolly stick down, and leak because the stems are rusty.
You can remove them from the hydro then and chuck the pins/ buttons in yer drill chuck and try rotating them gently trying to free them up, before you get them stuck down
---- it might work
Many people here have good things to say about the rebuilder.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
