Hello Everyone,
I just drained the trans tonight to get ready for the new fluid that should come in soon and I'm not familiar with this fluid at all. When I cracked open the case the fluid seemed a bit thin with an orange/redish color. Gears look great upon my first inspection but I did notice some sludge/residue on the upper walls of the case and the bottom of the case as it drained. There were no metal shaving in it and it would put you in mind of a apricot preserve spread. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it a normal sign of old fluid or possibly the wrong fluid was used before? Any guidance would be great as I stated at the start this is my first time working with this fluid or transmission related at all. Thanks. -Jessie |

Uh....YES. There should be NO SLUDGE in the transmission case. Clean up the entire case until it is sludge free, down to bare metal. Then install the new Fluid (ie: Hy-Tran) and a new Hydro Filter.

The cast iron differential housing/reservoir is painted with a wine red color, no- seep paint many years ago.
you can safely clean/flush the housing with kerosene,brake clean etc. Myself, I prefer kero then a final flush with gas but that is me, I live dangerously. The factory hytran is a red color, they tend to get milky after a few decades from condensation. A drain & flush and it will be good for another decade. ![]() |
