Default Steering Gearbox for 982

Was just mowing grass with 982 and the steering got real tough and then nothing. It’s in the steering gear. I haven’t even began to search for a replacement, figured I’d check here first for recommendations, thanks

If you did not know, the steering on a 982 is NOT the same as the rest of the Cadets--its basically a scaled up version. I even did the ball bearing upgrade on mine but it uses a larger bearing/nut and I had to do some grinding on the frame with a Dremel to get it to fit. I don't know why, but something tells me there may have been 2 different steering setups on those. Search the parts book really good. I've got something Cadet that had 2 different versions and the second version was BURIED in the parts book. FYI, if you are running the original Onan, should you ever need a carb kit they used 2 different carbs as well--get the numbers off the carb.

Can you repair what needs fixed on your steering box?
Or did you break the casting?
They are pretty simple.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
