Default K301AS engine rebuild

Hi guys:

I'm getting ready to start rebuilding a k301as out of a 123. Other than removing balance gear and governor gear, anything else I should replace

Thanks Thad

I think he means he’s replacing the governor gear? Maybe with a steel one?

Maybe but I'm just making sure.

He says"gear" not "gears" most that have balance gears have 2 of them I haven't seen this but have read where some have 3 balance gears... (Mostly 16hp I think)

You certainly want to pull both balance gears and leave them both out. Maybe he doesn't know that the governor gear is " across the cam" from the balance gears?

I'd leave the governor gear in. If you want to replace it, that's a good idea.... but it kind of needs it.

You should replace:
Piston (and rings)
Connecting rod
Valves
Bore it
Grind the crank
Grind the valve seats
Bead blast and plane the head
And obviously, all gaskets and seals

Replace as needed:
Valve guides
Check the camshaft
Rework the lifters and adjuster bolts as necessary
Governor gear
Governor control rod bushing
Check the arm on the governor control rod. Weld it if needed.

Remove the balance gears and chuck them in the scrap.

Great. I wasn't sure what you meant by the way you posted your comments.

This will be very helpful for me in the future, thanks again!
It's good to see what really needs to be done.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
