| Input on a 2185

I'm looking for a decent rider that my wife will like running. A friend of mine has a 2185 that's in decent shape with 270 hours. Are these solid tractors? He wants $700.00. Lets hear some input.

No experience with those tractors but it has a real good engine in it and the hours are low, I say go for it and if the tractor turns junk in a few years you can drop the engine in a 782 or similar.

Basic LT... No hyd lift.. paint sucks... headlights are usually broken since individual can't figure out how to lift the hood properly.... the tunnel between the firewall and engine is normally missing so the engine gets packed with grass and the head gaskets start to go with overheating.... Its a good 500.00 tractor for lawn use or a 300.00 for a repower... What shape is the deck in??? |

I have one sitting outside. I agree with olds that it has a good engine and those are low hours. But they are made way lighter than the previous models, no where near as solid as the cyclops, like my 1864. I don't know how the rear end is in them reliability wise, but I do kind of like the foot controls. They have a Hydrogear setup that looks similar to the older models but the differential is smaller. The hood pieces are really fragile, thin metal. It would depend on the deck really. I would say the $700 seems a bit much for what it is but again depends on the deck. I see them all over Craigslist here for $500-$700... or better yet, free like mine. |

That's a tough call. The 18hp command is a great engine and if the tractor even goes to hell you can resale the engine and get most of your money back. The 1250 is a much better machine overall and the engine in them is unstoppable and fairly cheap to rebuild if it ever needs it. The only issue with the 1250 is the engine mounts going bad and causing damage to the driveshaft, if the tractor you buy needs engine mounts and a new driveshaft you will have to put a good chunk of change in it. Unless that work has already been done and done correctly I think $750 and $800 is really steep, $500 would be more realistic.

If it's for your wife to mow with I'd go with the 2185. Way too much for a 1250 anyway.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
