No Cub124. You do not need to take it down to bare metal. Just sand it really good and if there is rust spots that are uneven then put some putty to smooth it out. i use heavy truck primer, sand it,then non sanding primer before we shoot color. Check out my 108 in my albums. we restored it and didnt take it to bare metal. it turned out great.

Cubmonkey - I would guess that even sanding may not remove all of the petroleum that may be on the paint. Do you ever degrease the areas you want to paint? What do you recommend? The reason I am asking is that my engine bay is really cruddy and sanding every nook and cranny is going to be a tough job.

Go to your local auto parts store (Not Autoshack) and get (Not sure if this is spelled right or not) "Pre-cleano", (use as directed)

Cub 124 Some members clean old paint with oven cleaner. After your sure its clean, clean with wax & grease cleaner from any auto paint store. Do this before you sand as sanding will rub wax & grease in the old paint and cause you problems with new paint. Best of luck with your paint job JMD

I have used primer thinned to about half of what it should have been and got a primer "shell" that was thick and about rock hard. Not easy to sand, but one pass did it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
