Default Difference between starters 18 & 20 Mag
I gotta good starter I took off of a 20 HP Magnum engine on a 2072 and was gonna put it on a 18 HP on a 1872 until I was looking in the parts book and saw they have different part numbers. Does anyone know what the difference is and will they interchange?

Most likely the Number of Teeth on the starter cog.

OK...I found the difference. It is the 12V Cable post location.

1872 = #52-098-03 the post is on the side of the housing
2072 = #52-098-06 the post is on the end cap

The specifications appear to be the same otherwise.

I wonder is the 20 HP version would work on the 18? I would think physically everything is the same.

OK, thank you. I am almost blind now and have to hire someone to come to the house and fix it and I wanted to know I had a starter that would work before I have it fixed. Thanks.
