Default KT17 series 2....advice wanted

I bought 682 fixer upper with a KT17 series 2 leaking oil. The engine ran but lacked power said the PO.

Looking for advice.....I really have no desire to rebuild and keep engine. Im into the V-Twins. The internals look great, except the cylinder walls had some slight water damage from being outside with no plugs....not sure if honing would clean it up or not....the texture is very slight and more visually defective lookingstained than actual pitting. I have no experience honing cylinders and they seem to be the only needed attention..Valve seats are pretty good from doing visual inspection, compressed air and wetter water.

Basically, my question is this, is there still much of a demand for these KT's....especially the one I have with no filter boss??

I would either part out or get running and sell

Look for a 2000 series as a donor. Pull the engine and put in the 682. 2160's can usually be found with junk transmissions for cheap. Don't mess with the KT. If the tractor is IH built and you part it out, we will ban you for life.

One more piece of advice: If you don't know how to work on engines, you need to find some other way to make extra cash.

Tractor would not be parted out.....the KT17 would be. I was curious if there is a desire to run these KT'S in pulling setups

Are you looking to keep the tractor after you get it going, or flip it? Guess I didn't understand your other post...
If you're looking at keeping it, and your not into it to deep, there is a company who has a Vanguard replacement that it an almost direct fit. NOT the cheapest re-power, but an option.
Or call me and I'll take it off your hands.

I just replaced my kt17 with a ch18. Was a little confusing at first to me but once I got my head wrapped around it is very easy. My kt17 still runs as well. Actually runs very well. Just burns a little oil. I plan to use It for a log splitter. Either that or I plan to use the kt coil for the flame thrower exhaust on my car. Not sure lol..

682 is a very good machine. You came to the right forum to get it squared away

I take it you have the heads off to be able to see the cylinder walls.
Why don't you take some pix of the cylinders and post them,
then we can see what damage you are speaking of.
If it is only staining, it might be very usable as is.
Stains hurt nothing, pitting or worse is another matter.
I unlike some others, I happen to like the sound and torque of an opposed twin over a "V" arrangement.
Some like the modern engines,nothing wrong with that, I'm old skool on some things.

I'd get it running in the tractor and see what you have instead of going off the PO's statement it lacks power. I think one of the problems with KT engines is the cost of repair--parts ain't cheap and are a little harder to find. The main problem appears to be their reputation for self destructing--throwing rods or governor gears. Anyone who has ever been around them has seen it, that's why most folks are hesitant to pour a bunch of time and money into one with no guarantee it won't hand grenade next week. Yes they do have value, just not a lot.
