Well John,
Welcome to OCC. A little more history would be helpful. I get the idea you are new to this tractor. I'm hoping you only took the charge pump off the hydro and not the hydro all apart, unless you are familiar with doing that. The charge pump will go on 2 ways, they are designed so the rotation input can be either way according to the engine being used. ( those sundstrand hydros were used by many things/manufacturers) Changing rotation is as easy as removing the 2 bolts on the ears and turning the charge pump 1/2 turn and replacing the bolts. I get back to you in a bit and tell which side the milled flat on one ear is suppost to go when I go out to the shop. I have discussed this and it has been posted before on this forum, but @ my age I forget chit. ![]() The charge pump will not pump if it is set to the opposite rotation. This might not be your problem but is a good place to start. Ok, The milled flat spot is on the right side ( bolt ear) of the charge pump. (The right hand side is as sitting on the machine in the normal operators position as always) |

Now, if you have the pump on correctly and have the correct filter as sam mentioned and the hydro reservoir in not full of water, and it still will not move.
You can take the fill plug out and wrap a shop towel around your air blow gun and give it a shot of air while engine is running, taking caution to not use higher pressure, just a light pressure, about what you would use to blow up a balloon. That will get the oil into the filter/charge pump. Sometimes a unit that has been sitting dry for a long time, and the charge pump is worn, just can't suck sufficiently to get the oil moving into it through the filter. BTDT. Do make sure you have the hydro in neutral with the brake applied!! You don't want it to suddenly move and cause an accident. Now report back to us |

Are you sure the charge pump shaft is turning? If a roll pin in the drive line is broken, the drive shaft may turn but not transmit power to the charge pump and hydro.

Sometimes roll pins look fine but are sheared off inside.

Take the manual transmission shifter cover off, reach back in the hole and put a #2 phillips screwdriver through the hole in the stub shaft that comes out the back of the transmission.
Then take the tunnel cover off and clamp some vice grips on the drive shaft and try to turn it (in the normal direction of rotation).

Hi guys
well had a bunch of things to handle so back to problem at hand. Yosemite Sam tried what you said, the shaft won't turn so I think charge pump pin is good checked that the charge pump is on correctly oil & filter from local cub dealer. I found this poor cub just sitting in a yard covered with weeds and stuff was able to get it for free guy just wanted it gone. From what he said, it has been sitting there for at least five yrs. His son was working on it, cause engine was broken. It turns out this cub had a broken piston rod. I fixed that, runs great. Every thing works except transmission and hydro lift for deck. I am going to add pics hope this works So now that the weather has gotten little colder and wet, I'm hope to work on my cub and solve the mystery. John ![]() ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
