Default Carb spacer for 1650 and more questions

Hi Guys,

I just discovered the 1650 originally came with a carb spacer between the engine block and the carburetor, but it is missing from my tractor. Is it important to install this? If so I'll find one and purchase.

I am also missing the breather filter (green square fiber piece). Is this important? I'm guessing it is because I've notice a little oil dribble out the notch in the top of the valve cover. Should I be concerned that oil is leaking out of that small hole at the top of the valve cover and may be an indication of problems elsewhere with the engine or is this most likely because I am missing the green square filter?

The carb spacer is probably no big deal but the breather will be an issue, the breather is designed to allow the crankcase pressure to escape but keep the oil in. While you have the breather apart you need to double-check to make sure the little hole on the inner piece is at the bottom, if it's at the top it wont allow the breather to drain and will cause a leak.

Okay, I'll take it apart and confirm the "top" is at the top. I'm pretty sure I paid attention to that and I am aware of the drain hole on that inner piece and importance of orientation.

I guess I'll find out if oil still leaks out after the filter is installed. I hope not!

You can use steel wool, or even furnace filter fiber and make a new breather filter. Done it many times.

Carb spacer is only important if there are clearance issues with linkage or the filter housing. Won't affect running.

Thanks Jonathan. Sometimes the little things matter and sometimes they do not. I've learned a lot working on this tractor with my son and the folks here are awesome.
I just remembered the rubber tube that connects from the flywheel cover to the air cleaner is pushed up against the air cover. This cannot be correct and I wonder if I should add the spacer for this reason. What do you think?
I could cut the rubber piece shorter or add the spacer.

The rubber piece is supposed to attach to the air cleaner.....

Yes, that is understood but the rubber piece goes all the way thru the air cleaner housing and presses against the air cleaner cover (lid). I do not believe this is as intended and will prevent air from entering as it should. I know this is occurring because I can see the oval shaped rubber tube "witness marks" on the inside of the air cleaner cover.

I imagine this is occurring because I am missing the spacer between the carb and engine block. Thoughts from our members?

Should I go purchase the spacer or cut the rubber tube?

I don't think your understanding. It is supposed to ATTACH to the air cleaner housing. It just pushes into the blower housing. Attach it, and shove it into the blower housing farther.

The thermal isolation gasket, IH-117201-C1 USE KH-47-049-01 is about $16.00 and is available from our sponsors and from other cub parts supply houses. It’s purpose is not only to help keep the carb and thus fuel cooler but also to help prevent dirt from being drawn into the intake, one of the primary causes of premature engine wear.

I'd buy it.
