Default Just picked up a 102

Hi all!! I'm new to the forum and new to Cub Cadets. I've always loved old tractors. I've been in need of a lawn mower, so when this beauty showed up at the auction yard I couldn't help myself. I got it plus a snow plow and a Brinley single disk plow. The mower seems to run great. The belt for the PTO to mower is not on the machine. I quickly looked at the pulleys for the mule drive and one seems locked up, so some new bearings are in the near future.

A question I have now is how in the world does the belt go from the PTO to the mule drive and onto the mower deck??

I look forward to learning lots about the old machines.

Steve

Very nice 102 with "oops" pedal! The rod that you have pictured that goes the Pto engage/release lever has a turnbuckle on it that runs up the right side of the engine. Loosen it enough to feed the belt in between it and the Pto then run he belt back to deck. Check with our sponsors above for your parts you need or place an ad in the wanted section. There's also free manuals in the tech section. Good luck and welcome!

Congratulations on a nice looking 102 with some dandy extras!!! Before you mow with it and while you are putting the mule drive belt on it, you will need to put a new wear button on the PTO engagement arm. From your pics, you can see how it is rusted at the top of the arm that touches the front PTO on the engine. That is indicative that the wear button has worn away (or fallen out) and the arm was used repeatedly without the button, thereby heating up the metal that was in contact with it to the point where the paint peeled off and then the elements have rusted it. You will also need to inspect that PTO on the front, as well. If I am correct on what I see, then that arm may have gotten into the fins of your PTO and done a nice little number on it. I hope all that you need is a new PTO wear button. It is a very nice cub cadet and I am glad you found it up in the great white north!!!

Can't tell if it's original but it even has the grill screen.

Very nice 102! Especially for Alaska. I worked up there on a cedar shake roof at a visitor center years ago in Sitka. You'll get her figured out

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
