I found this on Craigslist, and I went to pick it up today. The po got it running while I was there, so I know that the engine sounds good and doesn't smoke. It didn't want to stay running, but that's okay.
A kinda funny thing happened during the sale; I was standing beside the Cub, and talking with the po, when the coil blew up right in front of me! The coil shot a jet of oil straight up toward the carburetor, and it got splashed onto the battery as well. Luckily, no oil got on me, or the owner. As it turned out; the key was left on, and a battery charger, turned on "high" was clamped to the battery. After that, I was determined to get the Cub home and teach it some manners. I picked up a new battery to start with, and I'll get a coil tomorrow. This will soon be followed by 4 new tires, a carb rebuild, lube etc. just to start with. I'll show this 102 who's boss! ![]() |

Nice find especially with a creeper gear!!
I had a coil do that once on an old tractor... same situation... battery charger on kill with the key on and apparently the points were closed. Not a good situation!! ![]() Glad the hot oil didn't get on you... that would've burnt like heck!! ![]()

My eye also spy an amp gauge to go with creepy and nice original seat. My second 102 had a shield over to coil to keep the gas from the leaky bowl off. Maybe you need one to keep the oil in the coil!

Thanks guys! I can't wait to get to work on her. The creeper gear was a big deal to me, but just the fact it had a geared transmission was also pretty cool. There's some work ahead, but that's half the fun.

I was having some concern today because I couldn't locate the serial number Then I came across this: http://cubfaq.com/serialnumbers.html
I was relieved to find it, and then discovered that mine has a double-struck serial number making it extremely rare and desirable to any serious collector. ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
