Default Picked up an 1864

Well, my old 582 gave up the ghost and I had to make a move so I picked up a fairly nice 1864. Luckily I had been watching a few and was getting ready to go look at this one anyways. Haven't finished cleaning her up yet so no pics til later this week. Haven't found anything major yet, it was running a bit rough but turned out someone screwed up the choke cable adjustment and the butterfly wasn't fully opening. One of the shoulder bolts was missing from the mule drive. Friction washer needed tightened up on the forward/reverse lever. Ordered new bushings for the deck wheels. Gave her a good greasing.

Still have a few other things to do, I want to remove the covers, clean up the engine and make sure there aren't any mice nests in there as it seems to run a little hotter than I thought it would. Looks like I need to remove the engine though to get that rear firewall pan off, really didn't want to go that far. Going to pull the deck tonight and sharpen the blades then level everything up.

The hood is cracked where it bolts to the frame so I need to figure out a better way to attach that. It almost looks like my 582 hood and fenders would fit but the dash is a little wider on the 1264. Seat isn't in the best of shape so I'll keep my eye out for one. Other than that it's pretty clean, no rust on the tractor, just the deck. It came with an original cub cadet bumper too which I understand are fairly rare. I also got the original hubcaps, wheel weights (not sure if they are oem or not, they are covered with a gray rubber), a set of chains and a snow blower. The blower sat outside so it's a bit rusted up but no holes in it and he claims it works great.

Hopefully I'll have it ready to go in the next few days and I'll take some pictures. Anyone know where I can get a service manual? I have the original owners manual and some other papers that came with it but not luck on finding a service manual.

Congrats on the 1864, probably one of the very best Cubs ever built, just my 2 cents. PM me your e-mail and I'll send you a PDF of the service manual. Check the bolts that hold the rear end in the frame. Recommend a set of GT rear end braces from Xtreme, not as necessary as on the Supers but the GT can also bust the aluminum rears.

Some good reading about the care and feeding of the Cyclops series.

I have ONE 1864. I also have one 1664 and one 1464. The latter two are the results of Vanguard engine changes. The Vanguard makes the tractor even better due to the lighter weight of the engine.

I want to say that there a very good rig and I love mine. I got mine out of the garage about two weeks before my garage caught on fire, and if it would have been in there it would be gone. That's about the only thing I have left now. Atleast I can still keep the yard mowed.

Thanks for all the help guys. Between reading all the links Sam provided and doing a little more looking around myself I have quite a list of things to run down now, lol. I think I will go over the deck first so I can cut grass then just go through my list one at a time. After seeing all the gunk that came out of the axle shafts in Sam's pictures that job has moved to the top of the list. The only idiot light that seems to work is the oil light and I'm starting to lean more and more towards getting the axle braces for the rear even though I don't plan to do more than mow with it.

I found another motor for my 582 I think I'm going to pick up in a couple days. I plan to replace it and just keep the plow and chains on it for snow removal duty. Evidently the motor is out of another 582 so it should be a pretty simple swap.

Gentlemen, I've knocked a few items off my list and added several more but at least it's not getting longer, lol. I have two more questions. First, was the transmission sealed at the factory using some light grey sealant? I'm really hoping this thing wasn't taken apart.

Second, when you turn your key on how many dash lights come on? I only have 1, the oil light , the rest stay off. I swapped bulbs from one of the ones not working to the oil light that is working just for a quick check and it didn't change anything but I'm not even sure they are supposed to come one with the key like a car does.

Other than that she's coming along. I got everything done with the deck, it had been installed incorrectly, thank goodness he gave me a manual for it or I'd have never got it right again. The mule drive was mounted in the wrong bolt holes and the adjustable links were wrong also. Gave the deck a good cleaning and lube, I'll paint it over the winter.

I also got the engine cleaned up looking for the oil leak he was telling me about, I'm not even sure it exists. It was wet at the bottom of the engine and you can see where it was spraying oil on the oil filter from the PTO, that's why I think he said it had a bad front seal but you can see where it's wet around the fill cap and may have been running down the front of the engine and onto the PTO. I'll just need to keep an eye on it I suppose.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
