Hey guys, just purchased my first cub cadet from its original owner. Motor runs excellent and the tractor itself is in decent shape, but having drive train issues. when I release the clutch ( wether it's in neutral, or in any of the gears) the motor stalls out but tractor does not move. At higher RPM's I can release the clutch and the clutch will just smoke. Not sure if the clutch needs replacing or if there's something wrong inside the transaxle? It rolls around in neutral so I don't think a brake is stuck on. No experience with these things so I'm really stumped on what to check/do

I'll save you some search time, here is the link to the chassis manual: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4641 |

Thank you, I'll take a look at it! I'm almost thinking it has something to do with the creeper, i feel like it's not engaging into the low or high range ( but I'm new to this so I could be wrong)
Also, I did get the motor to run better and now it won't stall out. Clutch plate really doesn't look all that work down, but It slips like crazy. Is there supposed to be a spring right here that puts pressure onto the plates? It looks like there's one that's busted/ half missing. |

I'm also kind of thinking it could be the creeper gear. The handle flops around and doesn't feel like it's engaging into a gear, no matter what I do.
Honestly It's probably just the clutch plates slipping, but I'm kind of in denial because I live in Canada and it'll take months to find parts and get them shipped here so I'm trying to rule everything else out first lol |

Clutch plates shouldn't just slip. I doubt you have a clutch issue, but keep slipping them and you will....
Download that manual and look through it. You might answer your own questions. You didn't mention it had a creeper. Yes, the issue could be in it. None of our other Canadian members complain about getting part there as an issue. Tons of stuff on ebay, and other members here. It might take a little longer to go through customs, but I didn't think it was a super huge deal. |

I think I would jack it up and put jack stands under the rear wheels. Start it up and try running through the gears. If the wheels don't spin and the clutch still smokes you got gear problems. I'm betting creeper.

if it was stuck in 2 gears it would lock the bottom shaft just like having the brake on

Not stuck in two gears then..... Could still be in the creeper. |

Just tried jacking it up, put it into first gear and it still smoked when I let off the clutch. the transmission engages into all its gears nicely, so I'm definitely thinking it's the creeper now. Creeper gear handle does nothing

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
