Okay guys, on Saturday I mowed with my 1872 and 54" deck for the first time. I was mowing in heavy, thick grass and it seemed underpowered at times. Someone suggested that I check compression, which I did this evening. It only shows about 90 PSI on both cylinders. The engine runs great, with minimal or no oil consumption, and it doesn't smoke. There doesn't seem to be a lot of blowby, with only trace amounts of oil residue in the air cleaner. It does start hard sometimes, in fact, a couple times lately I had to give it a whiff of brake cleaner to get it to start. I believe the engine has about 700 hours. Any thoughts?

Clean the fuel system, tune the carb and adjust the governor. Check the max RPM while your at it. Sounds like it's running a little lean. Check the head gaskets and make sure they aren't leaking. Start with that. I'm pretty sure you are in need of some "tuning".

90s actually not to bad, you might get some more with new head gaskets and trued heads. as for it being hard to start and down on power id be looking at the carb, it could need rebuilt or its time to adjust the governor and linkage to make sure your getting full throttle.

Thanks guys! Looks like the consensus here and elsewhere is that I need to do a governor adjustment. I'll also clean the carb. So if 90 PSI compression isn't bad, what is it supposed to be? I'm looking in a service manual and not finding that spec.

You won't find it in the manual. On that engine.... I've seen them still run good as low as 75/80 psi. I like to see at least 100 psi, so 90 isn't too bad. Range: 80-120 is close.

when i was working on my old 1811 which has the same engine i believe the service manual said anything above 80 or 85psi was ok, if i were you id pull the tins and look for evidence of leaking head gaskets and go from there.

just went through the manual again and in section 4 page 4 it says if the difference between cylinders is greater than 15% or it has less then 90psi you should check for warped heads or blown gaskets.

Thanks again guys! Well that's a relief to hear that 90 PSI isn't too bad. I was using an old worn gauge that doesn't hold pressure anymore, and it was actually reading more like 95 PSI, maybe even 100. I didn't look that close because I thought 90 was way low, so I figured a few more PSI wouldn't make much difference. I'll check it with a better gauge and do a leak down test, and also follow your recommendations for a carb cleaning and governor reset.
