Just guessing, broke spring over the poppet ball maybe. Do all the other gears shift and stay in proper?

thanks for responding .2 gear does not engage at all ..also there is a scraping noise comming from the gear box when in neuteral.i use to plow with it a few years back mostly useing 2 gear i think i toasted it becuase that was the only gear that made a clunking noise or scraping noise ..last week i tried to load it up a ramp in reverse after un succeeding thats when the scraping started when not in gear alsoits tough to get out of 1st to put it in reverse and reverse doesn't want to stay engaged .. thanks

make sure your driveshaft stops turning when you clutch it . The 1-R shift forks like to break to.

It could be a loose or broken shift fork or as mentioned above the poppet ball spring could be broken.

Pull the shifter and cover off and see what's going on in there.

Yes, you will have to split the tractor. The service manual will give you step by step instructions on how to do it. The manual is available online.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
