Default 73 restoration

Well guys, i took the plunge last night and started to take my tractor apart. The engine came out like a dream. I took the hood to my Votech school where they are making me new decals. I plan on giving the 73 a full working over from paint to new rings in the engine. Now, my question is, is there a set screw that needs to come out to remove the front axle pin.

thanks in advance.

Well there is two of use redoing a 73 at the same time. Well mine is a "1273" it has a 12hp in it. There is a rolled pin on the front that needs to be punched out. Do that and the it will all come off for ya. This is what it looked like before i tore mine down. Ill be sandblasting and painting soon. "I Ain't Lying" is my thread for mine.

Maple hunter sells complete decal kits that are really nice quality for a good price.

Thanks! the Reason I'm not ordering my decals is that I can get them a lot cheaper from my school. I took the whole hood into the graphic design shop and they got right to work! They only charge for the materials used if your a student so i'll probably get them for 7 or 8 bucks.

here's a little update, I have the whole front end of the tractor apart. I've been tinkering with the engine tonight and I got the head off. Turns out that I'm going to need new rings (I already knew that because of the smoke and warm-up time needed before i could start to move and give throttle). My question is, where do you get rings and other parts? Your local parts store?

You can't just put rings in, the cylinders always wear out of round and putting new rings in won't solve a thing. The engine will have to be bored for a larger piston, you can get complete rebuild kits on eBay for very reasonable prices.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
