I'm having issues with my 122
I had my starter-generator and regulator checked at an electrical shop the SG tested good but the regulator was bad so I bought a new one and put it back together, but I'm still having the same problem as before. When I test to see if the system is charging my meter readings are all over the place, jumping from 8 volts to 18 volts and everywhere in between, very erratic and it never settles on any one reading. When at the electrical shop they hooked my SG up with the new regulator and it worked fine. So it leads me to believe that I have some other problem? I tried to polarize the regulator by touching a jumper wire on the GEN. terminal and the BAT. terminal, as soon as I touched the wire on the terminals the SG started to turn the engine over, the key was off. Does anyone know what my problem is? I tried my meter on one of my other cadets and it works fine. P.S. the wiring harness is new, the tractor starts and runs fine other than the described problem. Thanks everyone. |

AS A TEST.........
Run a long jumper wire from the Battery Negative Terminal to the V/R case or housing. Let us know the results.

Do the terminals on the old and new regulators have the same markings in the same locations?

I worked on my charging issues a little bit today,
I hooked a wire from the regulator mount to the negative battery post, same result, crazy numbers jumping all over the place. Hooked the same wire from the negative battery terminal to the SG, same result. Also hooked to one of the engine mounting bolts, same result, so I would say everything is grounded properly. The old and new regulators are the same, so I'm sure I have it wired correctly. The system does charge, after letting the tractor run for a few minutes I get a higher voltage reading at the battery with the engine not running than I get when I checked it before I started the engine. I'm at a loss, I guess as long as it is charging the battery I will try to let it go, it bugs me though, I would like to figure it out. Thanks for the help |

From my research....
![]() You have this....231-12004 ---------> 231-12032 As you can see from the image, it is only rated for 7-9 Amps. The S/G puts out 15 Amps. The correct V/R would be: 1118988 Delco-Remy or Cub Cadet IH-545130-R92 It looks like you have the wrong V/R based on a poor substitution.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
