Default 125 rearend fluid question

Good morning everyone. I'm going to be removing the lower sleeve hitch bracket from my 125 and will be replacing it with one from Xtreme motor works that has the "ear tabs" on the side. I am aware that some fluid will drain out during the swap. My question is do I need Hy-tran for the rearend or some other type of fluid?

Default Stick with IH fluid

I tried some hardware store brand hy tran fluid and I was disappointed. When it comes to the hydro I recommend IH.

Thanks timbo. When I refill I fill it until it gets to the top of small screw in the middle of rearend cover correct? Sorry for so many questions but most of my Cubs are gear drive.

How long has it been since the fluid and filter have been changed? If not done by you do you know what it has in it?

Why not change the fluid and filter while you are there?
If not then if you are only loosening the three bolts turn I doubt you will lose any fluid. Usually you have to pry the cover loose to get fluid out.
Edit: I looked at the ears you mentioned, sorry I didn't read closer. You will lose fluid out those holes

The method you're describing is correct but I would second the idea of doing a cleanout / filter change while you're at it. I worked on my 782 last year. Pulled the cover off, drained everything, cleaned the magnetic plug, wiped any grunge out, replaced the filter, put a new gasket on and refilled with real HyTran. It didn't take all that long and it gave me peace of mind before I started using the hitch.

Ok cool. Tell you what though Hytran is expensive. I bought a 2&1/2 gallon jug it cost me $48 bucks after taxes from the local IH dealer. Crazy price!!

Thumbs up

I just ordered a transmission manual, a steering wheel spinner knob, and a draft plate for the sleeve hitch. All for my 125, man I love this tractor.

At the risk of starting the dreaded debate of trans fluids, Hy-Tran is what is officially spec'd/recommended for the CC trans. That being said, there are other suitable replacements that work without issue. I won't name any, just do some searching here and you'll find tons of debate/info on the subject. Just remember after all, it's just a hydraulic pump and some gears, nothing magical about it

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
