I have a cub cadet 1440 with a 16hp briggs engine model 303447-0447-01 and i am having the amp light come on when the tractor is off and it wont charge the battery. I tested the two leads coming from the engine and was getting 28-31 volts at full throttle which i presume was 3600 rps. I get the same voltage that the battery is putting out when i test from the positive terminal on the battery to the red wire going to the V/R. So i purchased a new V/R part # 845907 and it still will not charge the battery. Could my new V/R be bad? Or is there something that i am missing that could prevent the battery from charging? the two safety switches are disconnected under the seat and the PTO switch has been bypassed and a switch put in place by the PO. I was getting between 6-8 volts on the old V/R but on the new one i am getting 0. thanks

28 AC volts, measured between the 2 stator output leads @ full rpm is good.
About 14V DC from center lead on Reg to ground is good @ full rpm. And same reading between + and - of battery is good, again @ full rpm. If not getting 14V @ battery but @ reg could be wiring problem or Ign sw connectors which are a known problem. ![]() |

I only got battery voltage when I went from the positive battery terminal to the red wire coming out of the V/R. I was getting nothing out of the new regulator. Even when I checked voltage on it coming out at full throttle there was no voltage. I was able to get a few volts out of the old one. So I'm guessing the new regulator was bad. Will do more tests when abother VR comes.

Ok so I have gone thru all the wiring and fixed and cleaned everything that was corroded. I seem to intermittently get 20-30 volts AC out of my Alt on the engine. A few times I have gotten 29-31 but today after I cleaned all the contacts on the key switch and wired the pto Switch correctly as the PO messed it up. But this afternoon I was not even getting 20 VAC out of the alt on the engine. So that should be fun to pull apart. Anyone know if that is the problem?

My multimeter had a bad battery in it. Just double checked the alt and I am getting 31VAC. But I have gone thru two VRs and it still isn't putting out any voltage. I even ran a grounding strap from one of the bolts holding the VR on to the battery ground. Is their anything that could prevent this VR from charging?
