I recently bought a 582 for $200 and the engine was out because the previous owner said it blew oil through the carb. So my question is should I rebuild the motor it has been sitting for a while and there are mud dobbers(wasp nests) in the motor itself and it is missing some parts, or should I be looking for a motor to replace the old one. What would be a good motor to put in it that will bolt up pretty close the the original. Thanks.

Oil through the carb. Do yourself a favor and check a couple of things. Check the breathers and check the oil fill/dipstick cap is sealing the crankcase. No vacuum in the crankcase will deposit oil in your air filter housing.
I bought a 582 with an engine "which threw a rod" according to the farmer. Took it home and found the bolts loose holding the engine to the mounting plate. It slid forward enough allow the clutch drive pins to slip out of the clutch. I'm sure it sounded like an engine "which threw a rod". My point, don't automatically believe the diagnosis from the seller. You can see this happen with an ordinary lawn mower with a briggs engine. Leave the oil fill cap loose while engine runs, watch where the oil ends up. |

Ok thanks I will have a look at that and see what we find out.Where is a good place to get parts and maybe a rebuild kit for the engine.

The B&S engine in the 582 was notorious for valve seats falling out. It made the carb puke gas and a lot of time burp oil up the vent. No easy way to fix and no cost effective kits that I can find. Pull the plugs and look in the cylinders. You will see it if it's a valve seat. If so just stop and look for another motor.
There was a guy on here recently that tried to put a CH in a 582 and had to do quite a bit of work to get it to work. I didn't think it looked like a big deal.... but I have a lot of experience. Anyway... No real good "direct swap" out there for it, but yes, you can repower. |

Do a compression test. Get a shop manual.

A repower with a Kohler Magnum is as close to a direct swap as you get. I just finished putting a M20 in my 582 and it wasn't too bad. The hardest part is finding a good Magnum that is reasonably priced.

Plus seats are supposed to be re-staked as maintenance . Briggs knows they come loose not just on the twins but ALL.
