Default 1977 IH Cub 1450

I just picked up a 1450 this past week. Overall the unit is in superb condition... very impressed. I replaced the carb today and she just purrs now. The deck is a 44a... 0320017U103967...

I have every intention of getting her perfect and mowing with her for as long as I can.

So... lol... Ive read every post I can find regarding the PTO belt. This is a hot topic! It came with a very cracked 3/8" belt that is twisted at the PTO. The PTO pulley appears to be designed for 1/2". The twin mule drive pulleys are definitely 3/8s. The deck pulley is 4.25" and definitely 1/2".

So the PO replaced the mule drive pulleys with undersized parts that might actually be to the specs currently used? Is that right?

Did I mention it cuts like a champ? lol

So what would you do?
A. try to find 1/2" mule drive pulleys? Then find the correct 1/2" belt?
B. throw another 3/8ths belt on there and call it a day?

I would rather fight the good fight and find the correct pulleys so I can use a heavy duty 1/2" belt.

What is the part number for 1/2" drive pulleys?

Rick

Should be a 3/8" x 78" or 79". Using a 1/2" belt with 3/8" pulleys will destroy the 1/2" belt in no time due to the pulley edge cutting into the cord area of the belt.

The correct Mule Drive (PTO) belt for your application is #IH-59971-C1 Belt.

The belts are inexpensive... gonna order both and return/swap for another good one.

That ends up a 3/8s belt... you wouldnt look for 1/2 pulleys to match the pto and drive pulley ?

The IH design and parts has worked well for 40+ yrs. So, NO, I wouldn't change anything.

IF..........you want to re-engineer your tractor and deck, you certainly can.

Im not a mechanic and definitely not an engineer.. lol

So the mule drive pulleys ARE 3/8s and everything else is 1/2.

I dont think its a matter of "everything else being 1/2" " The pulleys that your thinking are 1/2" I think are a bit deeper than a nominal 1/2" pulley allowing a 3/8 belt to ride correctly deep in the "V" opposed to a 1/2" belt riding closer to the top of the V.. If you put a 1/2 inch belt on there with original setup it will fray the belt rather quickly. However Ive had my 3/8 belt in place for a few years now with no issues. It was built to run this way

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
